Broadway Shows Light up the Miami Stage

There is something very special about attending a show on Broadway. Anticipation and excitement build as the theater lights dim, the orchestra plays and the show begins. It’s a poetic affair, allowing the audience to lose themselves in a compelling story narrated through music and dance.

Unfortunately the heart of Broadway is located in New York City, which is not ideal for those living in Miami. With classic shows such as Les Mis, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera to new hits like If/Then and Kinky Boots, it’s no surprise people are flocking to the New York City Theater District just to have the opportunity to see these amazing shows live. If a trip to The Big Apple is not in your near future, no need to worry because the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is bringing the Great White Way to your backyard.

Fresh from Broadway, the Arsht Center provides Miami with smash hits and Tony Award-winning performances like War Horse, Once, Mama Mia! and Elf. If you’re a fan of the theater or simply want to experience a Broadway play first-hand, here’s a list of must-see shows for the 2014-2015 season.

Evita: Inspired by true events, Evita follows the passionate, yet tragic life of Eva Peron (The First Lady of Argentina; not Madonna). Featuring music by the incredibly talented Andrew Lloyd Webber, this show tells a story of passion, charisma and greed as we follow the rise of one of the most powerful women in the world. Evita will run Tuesday May 27 through Sunday June 1.

The Book of Mormon: Brought to you by the creative (and genius) minds behind South Park, The Book of Mormon is a religious satire following the journey of two Mormon missionaries as they embark on a mission to Northern Uganda. Easily one of the funniest plays in Broadway history, this Tony Award-winning musical is not to be missed. Disclaimer: Leave the kids at home. The Book of Mormon will run Tuesday December 2 through Sunday December 14.

Newsies: “Headlines don’t sell papes. Newsies sell papes.” Adapted from the 1992 Disney classic (and Christian Bale’s finest work), this smash-hit follows the true underdog story of the New York City Newsboys Strike of 1899. Seize the day with this musical event for the whole family. Newsies will run Tuesday February 3, 2015 – Sunday, February 8, 2015.

As the famous song goes, there is magic in the air on Broadway…in Miami. See you at the theater!
