The Broken Shaker: A Cocktail Oasis in Miami Beach

By Erica Greenfield

Wunnamedhen passing by the former Indian Creek Hotel, most people wouldn’t even give a second glance.  If they did, we guarantee they’d be pleasantly surprised because this classic Art Deco building was not only completely renovated to become the city’s trendiest boutique hostel, The Freehand Miami, but it has also become home to one of Miami’s most popular bars, The Broken Shaker.

From the same minds that gave us Bar Lab, cofounders Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta brought their creativity and passion for mixology and crafted cocktails to life with a pop-up bar during Art Basel in 2012.   It was love at first sip and due to popular demand, The Broken Shaker set up permanent shop in the quaint backyard of The Freehand Miami.  They’ve been serving up their delicious libations to adoring patrons ever since.

Sure, this may sound like old news but this local watering hole is just as popular as it was opening day.  If you’re curious how a small pop-up bar stays relevant in a fickle city like Miami Beach, here’s your answer:  no line, no VIP, a great crowd, even better drinks and last but not least, games!  Yes, this outdoor cocktail bar comes fully equipped with two ping-pong tables, a bocce ball court, board games (JENGA, anyone?) and a swimming pool.   It’s basically a magical poolside oasis of booze, good people and games.  What’s not to like?

However, the main attraction that keeps the fans coming back for more are their specialty handcrafted cocktails.  Known for elixirs, syrups and infusions made from garden herbs and spices and fresh-press produce from all over the world, The Broken Shaker has mastered the art of making a fine drink. Whether you’re craving a classic like an Old Fashioned or in the mood for one of their signature concoctions, like their delicious Peach Caipirinha, this place has the drink for you.  If nothing on the menu strikes your fancy, have no fear because the talented bartenders can whip up whatever your heart desires.

For those feeling extra bold (and who possess a high alcohol tolerance), try out one of their famous $150 punch bowls.  Your favorite spirits, fruits and botanicals will be mixed together and served in a massive punch bowl for your group’s drinking pleasure.

With their bohemian vibe, indie-chic setting and kick-ass cocktails, it’s no surprise The Broken Shaker continues to charm Miami locals and visitors alike.  Cheers!
