A Miami Guide to Valentine’s Day

By Erica Greenfield

As a kid, Valentine’s Day was a fun-filled day of candy hearts, cute cards and boxes of chocolates from classmates. As I entered my high school and early college years, February 14 became the dreaded, annual reminder that I was in fact single (but also the perfect excuse for an epic girls night out!). For those of us in relationships, this so-called “Hallmark Holiday” can be exciting, but can also add a ton of pressure to plan the perfect romantic evening. I think it’s safe to say most of us have a love-hate relationship with Valentine’s Day.

However, I’d like to think of myself as a hopeless romantic and although I don’t believe we should only express our appreciation of loved ones on a single day in February, I do believe we should all embrace the meaning of Valentine’s Day. So whether you’re coupled off or still searching for Mr. (or Mrs.) Right, let’s go out and celebrate love!

There’s no better place to revel in love and life than Miami, so here are some unique Valentine’s Day ideas that our beloved city has to offer.

February 12-16

Celebrate the heart and soul of Miami’s art scene at Art Wynwood 2015. The fair will feature 70 international galleries showcasing emerging, contemporary and modern works, which will continue to shine a spotlight on Midtown Miami and The Wynwood Arts District as an international cultural destination that is continuously flourishing.

Virginia Key Beach, 7PM & 9:45PM; February 14

Is there anything more romantic than a drive-in movie under the stars? We think not, so head to the Blue Starlite Drive-In, the first mini-urban drive-in movie theater. Spend Valentine’s Night cozying up to classics like The Princess Bride and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Gramps; February 14

If you’re into underground beer made my local breweries, then head to Gramps in Wynwood for Sud Swap. This beer bazaar features the best in brewing, bottle trades, music and interactive arts/crafts vending. Nothing says romance like $5 all you can drink beer.

Zoo Miami, 8 PM; February 14

If animal mating habits are your thing, then head to Zoo Miami for “Sex and The Animals” presented by zoo personality Ron Magill. It may seem a bit odd, but this critically acclaimed educational program is incredibly popular and features a presentation on the courtship and breeding habits of the animal kingdom. General Admission tickets are $35 per person and include a wine and cheese reception before the show.

Hard Rock Live, 8 pm; February 12-15

For a truly romantic evening, come celebrate the magic of Valentine’s Day with Andrea Bocelli. The world-renowned Italian tenor is making his fifth consecutive return to South Florida where he will perform a mix of love songs and his classic hits.

All year long….

Ah, the beauty of living in Miami. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or your average Saturday, there’s no better way to spend quality time with the ones you love than frolicking on the pristine beaches of South Florida. From parties and barbeques on South Beach or Crandon Park to sunset picnics at Matheson Hammock, there’s no better place to celebrate life and love than the 305.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Miami!
