Saturday is the best day of the week. It’s the only day that you get to do whatever you want, without the anxiety and pressure of school or work the next morning.
For those of us lucky enough to live in Miami, Saturday can be spent tanning at the beach, boating on Biscayne Bay, dining at the many delicious restaurants, or sipping libations at the latest bars and clubs.
However, beyond the stereotypical Florida beach bums and South Beach club rats exists a thriving community of street art and culture that brings us one of the coolest weekend events of all: Wynwood’s Second Saturday Art Walk.
With over 70 art galleries, pop-up shops and an assortment of restaurants and cafes that are adorned with graffiti art murals, it’s no surprise Wynwood is considered to be the heart and soul of the Miami Arts District. On the second Saturday of each month, these galleries and shops open their doors after hours to the public, creating the largest block party in the city. Although this neighborhood has a hipster vibe, Second Saturday draws out an eclectic crowd all celebrating free booze, food and of course, art.
Because this street festival will be overflowing with music, art exhibits and a variety of food and drinks, it’s no wonder that Second Saturday can be overwhelming for the first time. So for all the newbies out there, here’s our must-see guide for your first Art Walk experience.
THE FOOD TRUCKS
The secret to every great party is great food, and Art Walk is no exception. Every Second Saturday, Miami’s best food trucks roll into Wynwood serving up their culinary creations. Ranging from burgers and hot dogs to dishes with Latin flare, there is no shortage of options at this food fest. However, you can’t miss Ms. Cheezious. A fan favorite, this food truck dishes out their take on the classic grilled cheese. If you want to taste heaven, order the Crabby Cheese Melt. You’ll thank us later.
LEBO: FEATURING WORK BY THE MAGIC CITY ALL-STAR COLLECTIVE
If you’re interested in exploring the work of Miami’s up-and-coming artists then look no further than LEBO Studios. Local abstract artist David “LEBO” Le Batard willbe sharing his showroom with The Magic City All-Star Collective to showcase their latest work at this weekend’s Art Walk. Located at the Dorissa Building, come check out the latest creations from this gifted group of artists. Doors open at 6 PM.
At the end of the day, Second Saturday is about one thing: art. The best way to take in this hood is to simply wander through the streets and take in the wondrous maze of graffiti art murals. There’s no better place to view these murals than the Wynwood Walls, which feature street artwork from artists around the world. For the ultimate Walls experience head to Wynwood Kitchen & Bar. This local gem offers al fresco dining where patrons can enjoy creative cocktails and tapas while sitting on an outdoor patio surrounded by beautiful artwork.
If this street festival sounds like your idea of a good time and you want to see more of what this creative community has to offer, the next Art Walk is this coming Saturday June 14.
