Dwntwn Art Days
September 11th-13th, 2015
Cultural Venues across Downtown Miami
2015 marks the fourth annual Art Days weekend. Art Days is a collaboration between the Miami Downtown Development Authority (Miami DDA) and the cultural spaces and artists residing in Downtown Miami. Together, we have ensured that there is something for everyone, including exhibitions, artist projects, walking tours, art parties, family programming and so much more across a multitude of cultural venues throughout Downtown Miami. In this App you will find an Art Days event calendar that features special programs and free events (unless otherwise noted) packed into three fun-filled days.
Another significant aspect of the programming is Fringe Projects. Treating the City of Miami as a platform, Fringe Projects are temporary public artworks that integrate, investigate and interrogate Downtown Miami’s less conventional spaces at sites determined by the artists. This year, Fringe is thrilled to present three major projects for Art Days: Miami based artist Dara Friedman addresses the historical traces of the Tequesta Native Americans who once inhabited Miami in a multi-dimensional project including performances and the creation of a film. New York based David Brooks will mount an expedition to Brewster Reef (7.5 nautical miles off Museum Park) resulting in an activation of that park which brings the reef’s significance into literal view. Lastly, Los Angeles based artist Nate Page will create a dramatic intervention into the urban fabric of Miami’s downtown by inserting a stretch limousine horizontally with the front fender facing the sky. Engaging ideas of luxury and skyline, the piece brings into question our notions of “high-end” living in light of Miami’s rapid pace of development and mythology of excess.
After a day of exhibition exploring, stop by McCormick Place (111 SW Third St., Miami) for its annual Art Days celebration, Under the Bridge Downtown, which will debut a new façade featuring panoramic exterior murals, a sculpture garden, a newly curated art gallery, fine-art studios, and a performance facility. Kicking off the celebration Friday at 6:30 p.m. will be food, drinks, DJs, and the Opera Atelier, all free and open to the public.
