Celebrate Florida Bike Month in Miami

May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to giving biking a try.

Here are some festive ways to celebrate on two wheels in Miami:Mike-Joos

Gables Bike Day Sunday, March 1, 2015: A free family event.

Magic Mondaysevery Monday night at 8:30pm:Magic Mondays is a weekly Monday night community ride which traverses through Coral Gables, South Miami, and Coconut Grove. Ride along beautiful tree-lined avenues, historic homes, and see some of the distinctive architecture these areas have to offer.

Taco Tuesdays, every Tuesday at 7pm:  This ride is all about riding bicycles, hanging out, acting silly, being whimsical, speaking up, and having fun. We stay together, occasional outbursts of sprints, but for the most part we are a group and we ride as such. They meet up after 7pm at Pace Park, and will ride out closer to 8pm. Just look for the blinking bike lights in the park. Come out and enjoy a relaxed pace bicycle ride and get away from computers, dispatchers, rude customers, corporate politics, and all the other crap that comes with living in a world of sad clowns.  tThey explore different areas of Miami every Tuesday, and stop to get tacos somewhere along our route. This ride is not based in the “Criteria” culture of races and “A+ riding.” This ride has been created to empower you to create alternatives to the “boy in the bubble” car voyages that hide everything good that a city has to offer. It is an experience in sights, sounds, thrills, physical activity, and local economy that could never be replicated by a night out at (F) Art Walk.

Tour de Force – Miami International Film Festival, March 12, 2015: Combine two events in one- Miami International Film Festival AND Florida Bike Month- at this special film showing. Perhaps no film in this year’s Festival quite inspires how to make the most of the time that you have, as does the unexpected humor of the touching Tour de Force. Hannes (played by one of Germany’s biggest stars, Florian David Fitz) is a member of a summer cycling group that annually goes on an epic road trip selected on a rotating basis by each member of the group. This year, it’s Hannes’ turn, and he’s chosen Belgium – a seemingly random choice, but the bike club rallies to sets out to cover the Flemish countryside. Not far out on the road, however, Hannes shocks his bike club friends when he is forced to admit the reason behind his choice of Belgium – only in his early 30s, he’s been diagnosed with ALS, and this bike trip will be his last. Determined to forge his own road, he asks his friends for support in taking him to Belgium, because of that country’s progressive legal options for assisted end-of-life choices. What happens next tests all of our moral mettle – how to react? how to respond? Hannes’ friends and family choose love as the best option, manifested in a variety of different responses. The journey is not easy, but the finish line of Tour de Force is a transcendent experience. – Jaie Laplante
