There will be a whole lot more dancing in the streets in North Beach thanks to The Rhythm Foundation’s new agreement to manager the North Beach Bandshell. Built in 1961 by Norman Giller and Associates, the North Beach (or North Shore) Bandshell is an anchor of the North Shore Historic District. The historic district received its 2009 designation on the National Register of Historic Places based on the characteristic style of Miami Modernism (MiMo), a post-war modern style of architecture.
The Bandshell served a community center and gathering place for North Beach residents. Big bands would play on Saturday nights, creating an impromptu ballroom under the stars and in the echo of waves crashing on the shore. Famed variety TV show, The Mike Douglas Show, filmed on location here during the winter months. Benches were removed and the space was used as a roller skating rink. Now thanks to a 2010 renovation and new management, locals can look forward to many more cultural events returning to the North Beach. From Opera to a Brazilian Carnival Group to Swing Dancing, there’s something for every music lover coming soon to the blossoming neighborhood.

The Rhythm Foundation launches a new series that each month brings people together to share an evening of dancing (salsa, swing, cumbia, samba, disco, etc). With a different live band on stage each month, dance instructors will give the crowd a short lesson to start the night and then keep the dancing going, so everyone can learn or refresh their moves. In its heyday, the Bandshell held lively weekend dances. It’s time to bring the fun back! Free, with a suggested $5 donation. The French Horn leads the series debut with a night of French gypsy jazz. The trio will be joined by several guests including some world champion swing dancers. Led by French trumpet master Vincent Raffard, the ensemble’s inspirations draw from jazz classics such as Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grapelli, and classic French song.
